* Rosewood venue hosted the 1985 Florida State road
championships. In the 1, 2 category Kevin Carmichael (Chris
Carmichael’s brother) was the state champion. * After
the state championships in 1985, Rosewood course was used one or
twice a year for racing. Back then, Gateway racing course was
used every other weekend to host South Florida races; until
1991, when we were not allowed to race there any more. By 1992
Rosewood’s almost 3 mile loop, became the regular racing place
in South Florida.
* By 1993 the racing categories were senior men, women, vets
35+ and stock (equivalent at today’s category 5), composed of
senior men, vets and juniors. Main event back then had tough
competitors to bit, a 1988 and 1992 USA Olympian cyclist, 1994
world silver medalist USA team pursuit in Palermo Italy, Carl
Sundquist. Also a young pro rider just getting back to us from
Spaniard ONCE team; in 1989 they won the team time trial stage
at the “Tour of Murcia”. He was crowned best rookie rider at “La Vuelta a Castilla y Leon” in 1990, and won the points general
classification at “The Tour of the Americas”, Ivan Franco.
Between the creation powers generated by the two of them, it
made South Florida’s cycling level raised more than a notch.
* For a reason not to be named in the middle of a race some
when back in 1996; we were asked by Metro Dade Police
Department, to just; finish that day’s event and never comeback.
Sad moment for all of us, South Florida did not have any more a
place to race. Between 1997 and 1998 the lack of local races,
diminished our competitive level. Many fellow riders asked us to
reestablish racing, well we did. Rosewood Series as it now, was
born March 1999.
*1999 opened up with 5 categories, 35+, 45+, Women, 1, 2, 3
and 4, 5. Totaling 19 races for the full season. The first third
of the season in the category 1, 2, 3 had a difficult beginning;
the well known “Cuban Missile” Ivan Dominguez out sprinted Karel
Hemmer racing for Zwaluwen pro Holland team, to claim the first
yellow jersey. Other single race winners we had were Mike
Lifsthotz, Chris Frederick, Rayo Delvin, Rainiel Sanchez and Gus
Ferrer, but the overall standings so far, was kept by Ivan
Dominguez racing back then for Bike Tech Team. The sprinter’s
jersey so far was on Glenn Gardner’s hands from Magpies Team
ahead of Dominguez just by 2 points.
*At the women division, for the first three races
participation was “tiny” but as the time went by, more and more
started to join the racing journey. Alina Ponce with Florida
Spokes team, won the opening women race. Followed by Eve Sakran
Affleck and Donna DeSousa. For the first third of the 1999
cycling season, Amy Malmsberry with NWP had the yellow jersey
with 41 points followed closely by Tammy Thomas racing for GS
Laborde with 33 points. Third place was for Eva and right behind
Alina in fourth. Joe Wood from Florida Sports completed the top
five. The strongest team back then was Florida sports. Another
one day winners were Lynn Mcfadden, Frances Elliott, Tammy
Thomas and Joey Wood.
*Magpies Team was the one to be beaten at the thirty five
plus category. Glenn Gardner’s sprint was the fastest one, that
no body else couldn’t exceed at the time. Leaving many second
places to Ailton DeSousa, Peter Carlos and his brother Gary.
They were also dominating the sprinter’s green jersey. As I
remember, Magpies team always counted on Gus Ferrer to close any
given gaps. For the first third of the 1999 series; Gary Gardner
was already 11 points behind in second place on the general
classification, followed by Peter Carlos from MVP Team and
Ailton from Florida Sports Team. Closing the top five places was
Pascual Moreno from Miami Masters Cycling Team.
*1999 at the forty five plus category had two dominants
teams: Florida Sports and Everglades. The general classification
had in command Greg Affleck, racing for Florida Sports. He was
ahead of Juan Mestas from Everglades Team just by one point.
Oriol Cruzeta from the same team in third, followed by Jan
Jardine from Dynamo, closing the top five was John Butler also
racing with Everglades Team. Competition for sprinters jersey
was closer than the yellow jersey was; Juan Mestas was ahead in
first by a point, followed by Greg Affleck and Jan Jardine with
eight points each rider. Other one day winners were Robert
Scofield and Olivan Martin.
*Continuing with 1999 Rosewood Series in its first year, now
the spotlight goes to category four and fives’. Two teams
dominated the early days of this series, MVP and Andante. Frank
Travieso, racing for Andante was the fastest one to grab the
finish line, out of the maximum of forty nine point available
within seven races, He ended up with 43. Second place overall
was for a young rider by the name of Keith Norris, racing back
then for PAL. To complete the top five we had Peter Carlos, Jose
Menendez and Paul Capua, all racing for MVP Team. To mention
other one day winners, we had Peter Carlos, Michael Reynolds and
Raul Alvarez. In the sprinters’ classification Frank also had
the sprinter jersey with nine points, followed by Paul Capua and
Richard Ruiz with five and four points respectively.
*We already looped all given categories for the first third
of 1999 series. Now we are retaken category Pro 1, 2, and 3 for
the second third. For the next six races we had a different
winner every Sunday. Therefore top five places got closer to
each other. Big Wheel team took three victories with Delvino
Rayo, Ricardo Hernandez and Richard Cerda. Ailton Desouza won
June 20th, William Cuello with Bike Tech July 11th, and John
Cipolla with Jamis Team July 25th. Glen Gardner increases his
advantage on the white jersey by two more points, getting ahead
of Ivan Dominguez by four points. The yellow jersey leader
continues to be worn by Dominguez with thirty six points,
followed by Nelson Angulo from MVP team with thirty points.
Third place was for Noel Morales, in forth we had DeSouza and
closing the top five was William Cuello, Last three riders were
separated by only two points between each other.
*New players came to the women division for the second third
of 1999 series. Amy Malmsberry lost her yellow jersey to Joey
Wood from Florida Sports Team, but Liz Stone racing for Andante,
was in second place with same amount of points. Liz was leading
the sprinters jersey by three points ahead of Joey. Third place
for both jerseys was for Amy. Another one day winner May
sixteenth and June sixth was Valerie Marriott racing for Canari
Team.
*The Magpie’s team kept dominating category thirty five plus
throughout the second part of the1999 series. Out of six races
only one had not a magpie rider within the top five. Glenn
Gardner had both, yellow and green. In the sprinters jersey with
sixteen points, He was ahead of his brother Gary by seven
points, for third place with seven points each; we had Juan
Acosta and Pascual Moreno, both of them racing for Miami
Masters. Way ahead of the game with sixty points Glenn had the
leader’s jersey; Gary Gardner with fifty eight points was in
second place. With forty nine was in third place Ailton Desouza,
and with thirty seven each, we had Pascual Moreno and Peter
Carlos to complete the top five. Other one day winners we had
were Ailton and Gus Ferrer racing for Cycle Speed.
*For the second leg of the 1999 series in the forty five
category, Jan Jardine from Dynamo kept his domination on both
jerseys. Out of six races, He won four of them. John Butler and
Jim Hetherington were the other two winners. Second place for
both, yellow and green was for Juan Mestas; on leaders jersey He
was behind only two points, but in the green one, He was already
down by seven points. The general classification had Greg
Affleck with sixty two points, in third place. Forth and fifth
were for Team Everglades; John Butler and Oriol Cruzeta,
respectively. Also John took third place overall on green
jersey, just one point behind Juan Mestas.
*Category 4 and 5 for the second part of 1999 had a big
change, Frank Traviezo moved to category 3. This left new
standings for both jerseys, Jose Menendez and Raul Alvarez were
competing side by side for both jerseys. On yellow Menendez was
the leader ahead of Alvarez by four points, but on the sprinters
jersey they were tied with eight point, Peter Carlos was just a
point behind the two of them. Third place overall was for Keith
Norris, with ten points less than the current leader. Other one
day winners we had were Mike Butler, Brett Zelazek, and Reynaldo
Rodriguez.
*The final section of 1999 series was composed of six
individual races that concluded November 14th. Pro 1, 2, 3
category had an absolute winner; Ivan Dominguez won both, points
and yellow jersey. The final general classification gave second
place to Nelson Angulo racing for MVP team. Third place
representing Big Wheelers Team was for Noel Morales. Fourth
taken by William Cuello racing for Bike Tech. Fifth place was
taken by Luis Bacallao racing for GS Laborde. Dominguez took two
victories out this final section; other one day winners we had
were Luis Rios, Nelson Angulo, Ivan Franco and Frank Travieso.
*To conclude 1999 women division Joey Wood was the rider
dominating, she won five out of the last six races giving her
the first title and a place in the Rosewood hall of fame. Second
place over all was for Liz Stone. As a consolation if we could
say it, she won the sprinters jersey by only three points ahead
of Wood. To complete the top five for the general
classification, in third place we had Amy Malmsberry followed by
Eve Sakran and Tammy Thomas.
*At the end of 1999 season the thirty five plus category had
a total domination by Magpies Team. Glenn Gardner took home both
jerseys; in the yellow jersey competition he was ahead of his
brother Gary by eighteen points, third place overall was for
Ailton Desouza followed by Peter Carlos and Pascual Moreno
closing the top five. In the white jersey competition also Glenn
was ahead of his brother sitting in second place by fourteen
points behind, third place had a tie between Miami Masters team
mates Pascual Moreno and Juan Acosta. For the last third of the
series we had Jose Genao with two one day victories, and the
other one day winners were Ailton Desouza, Ricardo Hernandez,
Jorge Michelena and Glenn Gardner.
*Forty five plus at the end of 1999 had an absolute winner
for both jerseys, Jan Jardine on his quest to competing at the
2000 World Master games in Manchester England, took and included
Rosewood Series as part of his training program. His fast sprint
gave him a bronze medal on the Olympic Sprint discipline. Second
place in the overall was Juan Mestas followed in third by his
team mate John Butler. For the sprinter’s jersey Butler took
second and Mestas was third. Out the last six races, Jardine won
four and Roly Hurtado the other two. Best team of the year was
for Team Everglades.
*To close the 1999 season, on the category four and five,
Jose Menendez cleaned up the board. He took to his MVP team way
ahead of the field both jerseys. He was not only a good
sprinter, but a good time trial rider. Other one day winners
beside him with two victories was Yhosvany Martinez; with one
Peter Carlos and Brian Attis. This inaugural Rosewood series
gave us the first set of riders and teams to create our Hall of
Fame. Glenn Gardner and his Magpie team took the podium on the
thirty five plus category. On the forty five plus, Jam Jardine
did the honors on the individual classification, but team
Everglades took the spot as the best team. “The Cuban Missile”
Ivan Dominguez was the champ overall as well as his team Bike
Tech. four and fives no difference, but the rider of the year
was Jose Menendez and his team MVP. One lesson we learned, one
series for a complete year discourage many riders; therefore
2000 series was modified into three series and one final race
for qualified riders, to take from there the champion of the
year for each category.
*Unfortunately for the 2000 racing season, lots of data got
lost; therefore our compilation for this year will be limited.
The south Florida teams’ structure did not change much between
1999 and 2000. Taken this in consideration, the base of
completion remained similar to what we wrote for 1999 In the
category thirty five plus, for series one we had Glenn Gardner
from Magpies team as the winner. For series two the honor was
for Gus Ferrer. For the last series of the year Ricardo
Hernandez took the yellow jersey home; He also won the
championship’s rainbow jersey. The overall point’s
classification was for Glenn Gardner.
*Category forty five plus series one year two thousand, was
taken by Juan Mestas from Everglades Team, while series two,
three and the season finale was dominated by Brian Rader; the
overall points classification was for Roly Hurtado. AT the women
division, Liz Stone took series one, then for series two Kelly
Ilundain was the winner. Series three and the overall points
classification was for Joey Wood, and championship winner was
Liz Stone from Andante Team.
*Continuing with year 2000, pro 1,2,3 for series one had Jose
Gonzales as the winner, series two and three were for Frank
Travieso, as well as the overall points classification. But the
championship’s jersey was taken by Jose Gonzales. Category four
and five gave as three deferent winners, the first series and
the overall points classification was for Lloyd Quintana. Series
two belonged to Joel Barros and the last series plus the
championship race was taken by Lazaro Melendes Best teams were
for the thirty five plus category Magpies, at the forty five
plus Everglades Club, women division was for Florida Sports, Big
Wheelers took the honors at pro 1,2,3 and Andante dominated 4 &
5’s
*2001 Season. Series One at the thirty five plus category we
had Gus Ferrer from Damiani team as winner ahead of Bobby Lee in
second followed by Ailton Desouza in third place; both of them
racing for Jamis team. This racing year, Rosewood Series
officially opens the sprinter’s classification jersey with two
intermediate sprints, one at minute fifteenth and the other at
minute thirtieth. The winner of this new jersey was Matt Ridgely
racing for Everglades team, followed by Bobby Lee and Glenn
Gardner respectively.
*Continuing with 2001 series one, category forty five plus
was very competitive; not only on the yellow jersey but as well
as for the sprinter’s jersey. The winner of the leader’s jersey
was Fernando Angel from Miami Masters followed by Roly Hurtado
racing for Bike Tech, and closing the top three was John Butler
from Everglades Team. The sprinter’s jersey had the top three
riders with the same amount of points, but because of the
ruling, Alberto Falcon from Damiani end up as the final winner
followed by Jim Hetherington from Miami Masters and John Butler
in third place.
*Largest field so far at Rosewood Series women division for
the 2001 series; fourteen strong competitors and two powerful
teams, Andante and Everglades competed for both jerseys, but
Alina Ponce from Florida Spokes spoiled the field by winning the
yellow jersey by one point from Liz Stone, leaving the third
place to Anna Rego, both of them from Andante Team. Sprinter’s
green jersey was taken by Liz Stone followed by Anna Rego and
Angie Rodriguez from BBC team closed the top three.
*For the 2001 season at series I the category Pro 1, 2, 3 had
a new strong team; not only at the forty five plus category,
Team Damiani collected a good number of strong riders for both
of those categories. They were able to take first and second
place at this series with Yhosvany Martinez and Jose F Gonzales
respectively; on third place from Rubio’s team we had Luis
Bacallao. The first place for the green sprinter’s jersey was
for John Cipolla racing for Jamis Team; second place was taken
by Luis Bacallao, and in third place we had Jose F Gonzales.
*New contenders arrived to category 4 and 5 for 2001 racing
season. We had a close race for series one by having Garret
Moore as winner only by two points ahead of the next two riders
tie in points for second and third place, Alain Troadec and Rick
Rendueles. The point’s jersey was taken by Roberto Hernandez,
followed by Edson Guimaraes 4 points behind and William
Brintnall 7 points further back.
*Category thirty five plus year 2001 series II, race by race
it was head to head between Jose Menendez from Magpies, Ricardo
Hernandez from Rubio’s team and Pascual Moreno from Miami
Masters. Menendez emerged winner by only two points on the
yellow jersey. The sprinter’s jersey had more or less the same
situation between Brunildo Camacho from Del Valle Team, Glenn
Gardner from Magpies and John Cipolla racing for Jamis. Camacho
just for one point took the sprinter’s green jersey.
*2001 Series II for category forty five plus brought us a new
strong competitor, Brian Rader racing for Bike Tech Team; by
three points over John Butler from Everglades Team, he was able
to take his first yellow jersey home. Third place six points
behind Rader was Pedro Barzaga from Damiami Team, but take a
note that he took first place on the sprinter’s green jersey
followed by Fernando Angel from Miami Masters Cycling Team.
Third place on this particular competition was filled by John
Butler.
*Andante's team at the women division dominated 2001 series
II. Liz Stone won the yellow jersey ahead of her team mate Anna
Rego for ten points. Alina Ponce was able to hold third place
just by one point over Joey Wood. Liz also was able to win this
six points the sprinter’s green jersey, it was very interesting
to see that the final classification for the top three
contenders it was the same for both, leader’s and sprinter’s
jerseys.
*Category 4 & 5 for series II back in 2001 had a close race
for yellow and green as well. Only two points separated first
place from second and third, Jose Fernandez racing for Damiani
Team with 19 points took the second yellow jersey of the season
in this category. Next two places were for Alex Rodriguez and
Roberto Hernandez. On the green jersey competition, first and
second place had both nine points but Carlos Castellanos had
first the sprinter’s jersey and Alex Suarez could only tie in
points to get second place overall. Gabriel Diaz with one point
behind those two got third place.
*After a long recess Rosewood historical moments are back.
For the thirty five plus category at 2001 third series, a battle
for yellow between Magpies Team and Miami Masters was taken by
Jose Benitez on his team’s hard efforts, (A victory without a
leader) Glenn Gardner when saw that Benitez did not show up for
the fifth race of the series, took off from lap one; but little
by little Miami Masters brought that beak back and right after
that, they managed to make a five men break without any Magpie
rider on it that lasted to the end of the race. Third place
overall was for Hernan Perilla also from Miami Masters. The
sprinter’s competition was taken by Jaime Zapata, racing for Del
Valle’s Team by one point ahead of Jose Menendez racing for
Magpies.
*For the last 2001 series at the women division, we had Joey
Wood racing for Florida Sports dominated both jerseys, on the
yellow one, Joey was thirteen points ahead of Tere Camacho that
took second place overall. Third place, seventeen points behind
was for Anna Rego racing for Andante’s team. On the sprinter’s
jersey, Wood was ahead of Liz Stone by four points. Third place
overall on this jersey’s classification was for Rego.
*Forty five plus category for the 2001 third series had a
“new kid on the block” , Mauricio Mosquera on his first year
back into racing after a long and prosper pro carrier, was able
to win both jerseys; on yellow he was ahead of Roly Hurtado by
eleven points, third place overall with the same amount of
points was taken by John Butler. On the green jersey, Mosquera
was ahead of Butler by four points.
*We also had “a new kind on the block” for the Pro 1,2,3.
Daniel Chavez at the 2001 series III, took one victory, two
second places and one third place to claim the yellow jersey.
Second place ten points behind was for Luis Bacallao racing for
Rubio’s team; in third place we had with thirteen points Ivan
Dominguez racing for Saturn Team. Frank Travieso racing for
Damiani’s team took the sprinter’s jersey been tied nine points
with Daniel Chavez racing unattached at the time; third place
with three points behind was for John Cipolla racing for Jamis
Team.
*Two first places, one second place and one fifth place out
of five races, gave enough points to Jose Rodriguez racing for
Sol Designs to win the 2001 category four and five, third
series. Second place overall was for Kenneth Vargas with Easy
Rider Team, but he really was after the sprinter’s jersey; that
he took by five points ahead of Carlos Castellanos from
Andante’s Team. Third place overall was also for Andante’s team
under the name of Jose Fernandez.
